VS CE

My service learning was to carry out the exercise sessions with the old folks. However, the true intention doesn't stop there. By going for these sessions, we can bond and talk to the old folks, and learn more about how life is like for them. I feel that is very important as teenagers nowadays seldom stay in contact with their grandparents due to the stress and pressure from studies and CCAs. This would help remind us to be mindful and take care of the elderly in the society as they are still valuable to us. Also, these sessions teaches us to overcome embarrassment. There were 2 sessions which I attended, and for the first session I feel greatly embarrassed. However, I was told that there was nothing to be afraid of if you believe that what you do was right. Thus, that embarrassment was quickly shove aside by me and I carried out the second session with much more confidence.

All I can say after attending this service learning is that, elderly should be cherished more in this society where all people care about are things with monetary values.

The iPad training session was really an eye opener for me. I don't own an iPad but since my parents have the iPhone which is similar to the iPad, I learnt how to use it own my own. I was really surprised when I was suddenly chosen as iPad trainer of the day. Many questions came to my mind. My chinese isn't good at all. What if most of them only understand chinese? Will my voice be loud enough? And the biggest question of all: Will I be a good trainer?

Honestly, I was nervous before we started the "lesson". Fortunately,I had Yong Xiang who would help me to translate. Furthermore, the majority of the elderly understood English. I was relieved when I found out about that. Soon, we started the iPad training session. I presented on the basics of iPad like how to switch it on, move icons, access applications, etc. Actually, we spent most of the time playing the games on the iPad. The elderly were all very lively and eager to learn about this high-tech gadget. However, most of them felt that it was just for games. Haha. Well, during the last few minutes, I ended off saying,"Most of you might think that the iPad is just for games. But, you can actually find many useful applications such as iris, google maps etc on the application store."

All in all, I was happy everything went smoothly and glad that I managed to present the iPad. I do hope I get to interact with them again!

Service-learning has caused me to realise that living as humans is to help one another, all for a better life. Service-learning experience has indeed changed me in a few aspects. I have learnt to treat others, myself and the community with equal respect. With respect come new friendship, and a better quality of life. My thinking towards others, myself and the community has shifted from the self-centred thinking in the past to a spare-a-thought-for-them thinking. This has enabled me to interact with people amiably. The way I carry out actions to them and I also revolved in the spare-a-thought-for-them thinking. The best experience that happened to me would be the social interaction I got involved with the elderly. This experience yields a learning point for me. Personally, I believed that the elderly wants proper care and to be still able to learn with support, though they do not exhibit it. This has got thinking that the young people like me would all grow old. We will then want what all elderly wants. Yes, we have to offer support to liven up their twilight years. Upon entering my college and adult years, I will still stay involved in the community. To take care of your parents when they aged would be a natural thing. So, why not go offer your resources, be it mental of physical, to those really in need. Stretch out and teach them new things! We all want to be enriched right?!

The Service Learning has made a huge impact in my life. On my service learning, we had to keep an eye on the elderly while they were exercising. Some of us also tried to follow them in exercising. While we were exercising, we tried to interact with the elderly. They were very friendly. Even though I could not communicate with them, I just smiled and tried my best to communicate with them in some way. After half an hour of exercising, the elderly stopped exercising and we served them some drinks and muffins. As being the leader for that day, I went around taking pictures. From the service learning, I realised that not all elderly have family members looking after them. Most of them are lonely and the elderly care centre is a great place for the elderly to come and interact with other elderly. Also the exercise day helps elderly to stay fit. Most of the elderly seemed to be excited for the exercise day and all of them enjoyed it. This shows that even though they are old, they still want to stay active. I hope to go there again and help the elderly in some way again in the future!

The service learning session was a whole new experience for me. I and my classmates guided the elderly folks through some popular board games. They were extremely attentive and showed their willingness to learn and enjoy the games. During the session, I realized some of them were inborn leaders as they easily stood out and helped us guide the others. It was quite a pleasure to know that they were passionate about learning new things despite their old age. This really changed my attitude towards them as I used to assume that most of the old people were very inactive and unwilling to try out something different.

This service learning session has left me a strong impression. I saw the elderly folks, each of them paying extremely careful attention to the trainers
more attentively then we are in our daily lessons. Although the task assigned to them was as simple as cutting along the lines of the paper, they carried
it out to the best of their ability. When I saw their passion in wanting to complete each and every little tasks that were assigned to them as perfect as possible,
realized that the assignments (homework and projects) given to us should be completed with even greater passion. Upon completing their baskets, many
of them had a joyful smile on their face. Seeing all the beautiful smiles on the elderly folks, I felt that I had accomplished the greatest thing in my life.
